Vitamin B12 the energy vitamin

Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is a nutrient that is essential to the body. It is a water-soluble vitamin found naturally in foods derived from animals.

Vitamin B12 is involved in multiple processes, including the metabolism of amino acids, nucleic acids (aids in DNA and RNA synthesis) and fatty acids. It plays an essential role in red blood cell production and bone marrow formation.

It also helps maintain a healthy nervous system: it is necessary for the formation and preservation of the myelin sheath, an insulating structure that surrounds certain nerve cells and accelerates the transmission of nerve signals.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur when the diet does not contain enough of this nutrient, or when there are problems with absorption. Since there are no plants that contain vitamin B12 in active form, its deficiency is typical of people with a vegetarian and especially vegan diet. The over 50-60 population is also at increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency; the incidence of gastric and intestinal diseases, a low intake of animal-based foods or the long-term intake of drugs such as gastroprotectors and acetylsalicylic acid are all factors that can lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly population. Supplements can be important in all such cases. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause symptoms such as tiredness, fatigue, pallor, and anaemia. Tingling in the hands and feet, lack of balance and confused thinking can also be warning signs of a deficiency.

Vitamin B12 is present in all foods of animal origin, albeit in minute quantities. It is found in meat, fish, liver, milk, and eggs.

There are no naturally occurring plants or vegetables that contain vitamin B12 in sufficient quantities to meet human requirements.

IBSA has applied IBSA FilmTec® technology to develop a new line of dietary supplements in orodispersible film (ODF)

The new formulations, consisting of a small-sized ultra-thin strip (50-150 μm thickness), dissolve in seconds once placed in the mouth, providing rapid bioavailability of the active ingredient. IBSA food supplements in orodispersible film are also an excellent solution for those who have difficulty swallowing and taking the usual oral forms with water.
